Covington, Louisiana— AVALA is excited to share the news that Jomel Whittington, MHA, President of the AVALA Physician Network, has been presented with the prestigious honor of being one of Becker’s Hospital Review’s “231+ Black Healthcare Leaders to Know” for 2024. This recognition not only celebrates Jomel’s remarkable journey but also serves as a beacon of inspiration, emphasizing the pivotal role of diversity in healthcare leadership. Jomel Whittington has etched his name in history as the first Black president of the AVALA Physician Network. His tenure has been marked by significant expansions, including the addition of several specialties: orthopedics, hand surgery, primary care, pain management, and spine surgery. Under his astute guidance, AVALA Pain’s clinic has witnessed a remarkable growth of 50%. Moreover, he has the distinction of being the first African American to hold a senior leadership position at AVALA, a testament to his exceptional leadership and dedication.
Mr. Whittington’s daily responsibilities encompass leading operations for ten physician practices and managing all staff and business office functions. He has built strong relationships with top specialists in Louisiana, fostering partnerships that enhance patient access to primary and specialty care. He is also spearheading efforts to expand the network to include urgent care and neurology practices.
Before joining AVALA, Whittington was the Director of Operations for AVALA Spine (formerly known as DISC of Louisiana). There, he doubled the size of the spine surgery clinic, increased brand awareness, and created a first-class work environment. His innovative marketing and patient outreach approach has been instrumental in AVALA’s growth.
