Covington, Louisiana – AVALA proudly announces that AVALA Physician Network’s President, Jomel Whittington, was named one of 149 Black Healthcare Leaders to Know by Becker’s Hospital Review in April. The Becker’s article stated that diversity in healthcare, especially at the executive level, provides organizations with insight into the lived experiences of clients and employees. This leads to more informed, personalized care and improved care outcomes.
Jomel Whittington is the first black president of the AVALA Physician Network. He has personally overseen the addition of three specialty offerings within the network and has expanded AVALA’s reach to orthopedics, hand surgery, and spine surgery. He has also overseen the expansion of AVALA Pain’s clinic by 50 percent. Mr. Whittington is also the first African American to hold a senior leadership position at AVALA.
His day-to-day responsibilities include leading operations for ten physician practices and overseeing the management of all staff and business office operations. He single-handedly fostered relationships with leading specialists in Louisiana to build relationships and partnerships to better serve our patients with seamless access to primary care and specialty medical services. He is working to grow the network to include primary care, urgent care, and neurology practices.
Before coming to AVALA, Whittington served as the Director of Operations for DISC of Louisiana. Under his leadership, the spine surgery clinic doubled in size, from two providers to four, and increased brand awareness by championing reputation management and operational organization. During his tenure, Whittington successfully fostered a first-class work environment for all staff and physician partners to make the spine surgery clinic a stand-alone success.
Under his leadership, the company revolutionized strategies for practice growth through marketing efforts by reaching out to individual patients rather than relying on system referral sources. He used this research and experience to aid in AVALA’s expansion through its physician network.
Mr. Whittington’s commitment and passion for healthcare are displayed through his commitment to the AVALA Physician Network working to improve the patient and physician relationship.
