October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and AVALA is committed to educating the local community about the importance of early detection and screening. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, but it is also one of the most treatable when caught early. With statistics like 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, AVALA urges women to take a moment to check in on themselves and their breast health.

Why is early detection important?
When breast cancer is detected early, it is more likely to be treatable and curable. That is why it is so important for women to get regular breast screenings. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women start getting annual mammograms at age 40. Women with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors may need to start getting mammograms earlier or more often.
